“Limen Co-constructing the Boundaries” Beijing Normal University SFD Degree Show 2025

In an era of rapidly evolving generative technologies, we no longer confront the world in isolation. Instead, we coexist and coevolve within an intricate web of interactions among the world, technology, and humanity. Design is no longer merely a tool for problem-solving; it has become a practice of the “in-between” – emerging in the spaces between nature and the artificial, culture and data, reality and the virtual, the individual and the system. This year’s Degree Show revolves around the notion of the “LIMEN”: a lifeform that merges at the boundaries, and an understanding built through encounters and differences. Art and technology permeate one another, generating digitized emotional experiences. Service and care penetrate the surface of technology, touching the subtle threads and deeper textures of society. Education and the future are imagined together, awakening a new generation’s modes of perception and cognition through space, image, and play. Within the “LIMEN“, the subject is no longer solitary, and the boundaries become fluid.

This graduation exhibition anchors itself in the core proposition of **“Limen Co-constructing the Boundaries”.”** It delves deeply into the intricate, web-like interactions among the **world, technology, and humanity.** The main visual concept boldly introduces **Strange Attractors** as its central design language. The inherent characteristics of strange attractors—deterministic chaos, fractal structure, boundedness, and non-periodicity—are ingeniously transformed into a concrete expression of design’s cross-disciplinary innovation and integration.

Drawing upon four mathematical prototypes—**Dadras, Elhadj-Sprott, Lorenz, and Thomas** attractor systems—the design embodies deterministic chaos as a visual metaphor for the academy’s interdisciplinary educational philosophy. The diverse fields of **art, technology, service, and education**, though seemingly independent, resemble initial conditions within an attractor system: each follows nonlinear trajectories within phase space, mutually influencing and converging into self-organized, intricate fractal structures. Just as minute perturbations in an attractor’s initial conditions can trigger creative evolution, the collision and fusion of different knowledge systems give rise to unexpected cognitive leaps and innovative outcomes.
